Michelle Nobuko Manges passed away suddenly on October 17, 2003, in Austin. Michelle was born in Dallas, on January 5, 1962. Michelle and her family moved to Roosevelt, in 1970. She attended Junction grade school and high school. Michelle is preceded in death by her father, Ralph E. Manges of Roosevelt and is survived by her mother, Ayako Manges of Roosevelt; brother Michael Manges and wife, Gloria, of Austin; and sister Karen Manges Douglas and her husband, Mark, and their daughter, Michelle’s niece, Kate Marie Manges Douglas, of Houston. Very special and long-time friends David Ledbetter of Austin and Toby Powers of Junction are among the many friends and colleagues who will miss Michelle. Michelle was a sales professional for most of her career, achieving employee of the month three times while working for one of the country’s leading long distance service providers. As was so typical of Michelle, she was generous with her employee of the month awards, sharing her special parking space with other employees and treating her family to dinner at Sammy’s East Side Barbecue in Austin. She was a marketing major at Huston-Tillotson College in Austin at the time of her death. Those who knew Michelle undoubtedly recall her razor sharp wit, great sense of humor and her raucous laugh. She took her talents in humor to the stages of Austin comedy clubs where she routinely finished among the top contenders on open microphone nights. Michelle was a gifted singer who was blessed with a beautiful and natural voice. She performed in karaoke and amateur contests throughout Austin, and recorded tapes of her performances for fans, friends and family. The highlight of her musical career came when she was asked to sing lead for Butch Cassandra and the Moondance Kids when the band opened for The Incredible Wayne-O, during a tri-city tour by the internationally famous Wayne Newtown impersonator. At the request of her family, Michelle’s version of Natalie Merchant’s “Wonder” was played at the October 20, Cedar Hill Cemetery graveside service. Mike Henderson officiated at the service. Massie, 84, of Junction passed away Saturday, October 18, 2003, at his residence. Services were held at 2 p.m., Monday, October 20, at the First Presbyterian Church of Junction. Burial followed in Junction Cemetery. Arrangements were by Gentry-Fife Funeral Home. Carlton was born October 26, 1918, to Jim and Minnie Massie in Junction. He graduated from Junction High School in 1937 and entered the Army Air Corps in 1939, serving during World War II in Africa and China. He married Katherine Stapp on January 18, 1948. In 1978, after 35 years of service, he retired from the Texas Department of Transportation into ranching. Carlton was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Junction, serving as both a deacon and an elder, and a 60 -year member of the Masonic Lodge of Junction. Survivors include his wife, Katherine Massie; two sons, Jim Massie and wife, Marty, of Midland, and Scott Massie and wife, Carla, of Junction; one step-son, Bob Walber and wife, Harriett, of Arlington; six grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Naomi Shook, 96, of Fredericksburg and formerly of Junction, passed away Thursday, October 16, 2003, in the Fredericksburg Nursing Home. She was born in Lake Arthur, Louisiana, on December 27, 1906. Namoi was a restaurant owner, homemaker and a Catholic. She was married to George Broussard and they had one daughter, Hope Lamb Couey, who, with her husband, Marvin, lives in Altamonte Springs, Florida. Naomi then married Colonel J. Shook, and they had two children: a son, Tommy Shook who preceded her in death, and a daughter, Susan Shook Martin, who, with her husband, Bobby, lives in Junction. Other survivors include a brother, Robert Comeaux and wife, Francis, of Gulfport, Mississippi; three grandsons, Lamar Lamb of Dallas, Lance Shook and wife, Amy, of Austin and Rex Lackey of Junction; one granddaughter, Shawna Shook of Austin; and two great-grandchildren, Shonta and Camden, both of The Colony. Naomi is also survived by special family friends, Paul and Debbie Bierschwale, of Junction. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, October 18, at Graham Funeral Home with Rev. Jim Barker and Rev. Laurie Barker officiating. Burial followed in the Junction Cemetery. Pallbearers were Paul Bierschwale, Teddy Holekamp, Jimmy Traweek, Charles Allen, Steve Brown and Steve Couey. Kennon Stapp was an honorary pallbearer. Online condolences may be made at www.grahamfuneralhome.info. George H. Cousins, 85, was born May 10, 1918, in Brownsville, to George W. Cousins and Fenora Mathers Cousins. George died on October 17, 2003, in his home in Spring. George was a 33-year employee of Shell Oil Refinery in Deer Park, and was a 25-year Mason of Tucker Lodge 297 in Galveston. He was a Mayflower descendent of Miles Standish and was a 5th generation Texan of Stephen F. Austin’s 2nd colony at Alum Creek. He was a direct descendant of William H. Mathers, who was a revolutionary war veteran, and Ahijah M. Highsmith, Texas War of Independence. George was a 1937 graduate of Milby High School and attended the University of Houston. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, William H. Daniels; and also, an infant son, Jimmie Markham Cousins. He is survived by loving wife, Mary Diane Giswold Cousins; son, George Michael Cousins; daughter, Pat and husband, Wayne Blalock; daughter, Karren Cousins; grandchildren, Robyn Cousins, Bryan and Stacey Blalock. Services were held graveside at Forest Park Lawndale, Houston, on Tuesday, October 22, at 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations to Lighthouse Hospice 932 W.
