During the regular meeting of JISD School Board, on March 21, the members unanimously approved canceling the May Board of Trustee election. This decision was made because only the incumbents, Dr. Noe Martinez and Derrick Ard, had filed, with no opposition.
The recognized campus at this meeting was the Elementary School with Kara Fluty, principal, as the presenter. Fluty gave a report on the good TAKS results in Elementary and then presented a power point showing the many activities that have been occurring on that campus. She also reported that a grant has been secured to provide funds for purchasing and building an outdoor learning area with exercise equipment. Superin-tendent Dr. Reneé Schulze expressed pride in Fluty’s hard work in this process.
The consent agenda was then unanimously approved. This agenda contained the minutes of the regular February board meeting; the financial reports; food service report; and approval of new textbooks for the 2007-2008 school year. The consent agenda also contained the minutes of the DIC (District Improvement Committee) meeting which included a list of recommendations on the Dress Code that are to be sent to each campus for another review.
Dr. Schulze then introduced Cindy Wimberley and Misty Croft, elementary physical education teachers, and asked them to make a presentation concerning new flooring for the “little gym”. The old floor cannot be kept clean and sanitary because of the manufactured perforations in the tiles, it has become a health hazard. Wimberley and Croft had found a new rolled vinyl product (seams are heat sealed) that looks like a wood floor and will have a large circle in the center for circle activities. The maintenance cost of the material will be much lower, and it has a 30-year guarantee.
Dr. Schulze emphasized that Wimberley and Croft had done extensive research, material comparisons and visitations to other schools prior to making this recommendation. In fact, she called Wimberley a super “horse trader” as she procured a drop of price from $29,900 to around $27,000. There had been an amount of $34,000 budged for additional personnel in the event class numbers increased; however, student numbers have decreased so the additional personnel were not needed. Dr. Schulze recommended amending the budget to use these funds to pay for the proposed elementary gym floor. The board members unanimously approved this recommendation.
The next item on the agenda was the consideration and possible action on the 2007-2008 professional contracts/ resignations. The principal of each campus presented the teachers she recommended for rehiring, and the board unanimously approved these lists. The board accepted Charles McDonald’s letter of resignation as he is leaving JISD. The board also accepted the resignations of James Kistler and Martha Sauceda, but look forward to hiring them back for the 2007-2008 school year, following their passing of the exit level tests offered in April.
All board members were present.
