JHS band wins big at Llano contests

Last Wednesday found our JHS Golden Eagle Band traveling to Llano for the Region VII U.I.L. Concert & Sight Reading Contest, where they excelled once again!
Mr. Wynn directed the band in performing three numbers for the concert portion of the competition. They began with Them Basses, by Huffine/ Balent, which featured the low brass section of the band; then In a French Garden, by Meyer, featured the Woodwind Section and finished with Medieval Legend by Story, which featured all sections. The band received straight 1’s from the three judges (one judge even gave a 1-plus! He told Mr. Wynn they were the best he had heard in this competition!) Way to go Band!!!
Also, when the judges reviewed the music the band would be performing, particularly their first number Them Basses, they thought “this band is too small…they will never pull this off”, but they rocked the house! Never ever underestimate what 22 kids, and a band director who believes in them can do when they put their hearts and souls into their performance. I am so very proud and honored to have been able to share in this experience with them.
After their concert performance, the band moved on to the sight reading room. If you don’t know how this goes, it’s like this: the band is given a piece of music to perform that neither they nor Mr. Wynn have ever seen before. They have a very short opportunity to go over the music and parts, and then they must perform it for three new judges. According to Mr. Wynn, they did pretty well, but did miss some areas of the music. This earned them a rating of II. Still, this is nothing to be down about! Coming out of this competition with a I in concert and a II in sight reading is awesome! Mr. Wynn and the band have worked hard this year and are the very definition of Discipline, Dedication and Distinction!
JHS band students are: Seniors: Gary Del Vecchio and Anthony Ratukus; Juniors: Garrett Douthit and Levi Putnam; Sophomores: Addie Hodges and Clara Williams; Freshmen: Eric Aguerro, Magen Dennis, Lynsey Gold, Leaura Mullins, Gladis Reyes and Sara Sanders; 8th graders: Kevin Bowers, Elizabeth Dennis, Lacey Hibert, Abby Jackson, Coreigh Lawhon, Shelby Lawler, Kendra Powers, C.J. Ramsey, Travis Terral and Kilee Wilham.
The next item on the band’s agenda will be the Spring Banquet on May 7 at 6:30 p.m. at the First Baptist Church. The Golden Eagle Band Boosters will be hosting this event to honor all 6th through 12th grade band students. There will be dinner, awards presentations and a slide show chronicling the high school band’s accomplishments for the 2006-2007 school year. If you would like to attend, tickets can be purchased from any band student for $9. The deadline to purchase is May 3.
If you did not get an opportunity to attend any of the band events, this is a great chance to catch up on all their trips. We hope to see you there! Let’s show Mr. Wynn and students how much we appreciate all their hard work and accomplishments!
